Richmond VA is hosting this year’s North American Handmade Bike Show and I’ll be heading down with few friends from NYC. I’m looking forward to seeing (and meeting) some of the world’s premier bike builders, including personal faves like Richard Sachs, Independent Fabrication, Pegoretti, and Bilenky. If you’ve got an interest in the handmade side of the bike business, come check it out!

The Giro d’Italia is considered to be the little sister to the Tour de France. But not just any little sister – she also happens to be way cooler and better looking.
Photographer Dan Sharp covered the race on its 100th anniversary and came back with some pretty amazing images, which he published in the photo essay “Il Centenario”. Subtitled “Una Storia”, the book is edited by Jeremy Dunn, Joe Staples, and Max Erdenberger. Between the grab shots taken from within moving cars, sideline shots of the racers, pictures of the route and the atmosphere that accompanies the race, one quickly realizes that “the story” on this anniversary is as much about the culture surrounding the sport as it is the competition itself.
While I was tempted to take more than a few shots of Una Storia as it sat on my desk, I really didn’t want to give too much away – it is worth seeing for yourself.

Working on a project using team iconography from the 90s with Ethan Laek has me thinking about some of my favorite riders. Soviet racer Djamolidine Abdoujaparov is definitely in that category. In addition to having a baddass, Bond-villain-worthy name, when Abdou inserted himself into a sprint (wait, scratch that – he WAS the sprint), one quickly learned exactly what “edge of the seat” meant. An electrifying rider in an era of cycling that has produced many.
